Located roughly 300 miles southwest of Anchorage, the Bristol Bay region is home to the 4.09 million acre Katmai National Park and Preserve, the 1.2 million acre Becharof Wildlife Refuge, and the 1.6 million acre Wood-Tikchik State Park. To honor the region, and the interconnectedness of it all, we refer to the entire watershed as “Bristol Bay”. We acknowledge with respect the Yup’ik people on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play.
The area hosts Alaska’s most legendary trout and salmon streams including the largest run of sockeye salmon left in the world. The number of lakes and rivers seem endless and the fishing opportunities are similarly impressive. From giant ocean fresh king salmon to acrobatic silver salmon and some of the largest rainbow trout in the country, the Bristol Bay region of southwest Alaska is one of the most prolific and consistent sport fisheries on the planet. The Lodge at 58* North offers the best fly fishing or light tackle fishing for all five species of Pacific Salmon as well as rainbow trout, arctic char, dolly varden, arctic grayling, lake trout, and northern pike.

WHY CHOOSE THE LODGE AT 58* NORTH?
Experience
We are full-time, professional guides. Kate has been guiding in Bristol Bay since 2008, Justin since 2009, Ryan since 2012, and pilot Chris for over two decades. If you can fly there, boat there, or hike there, there is a very high chance that we have fished it. Our collective experience helps us make fishing location choices and keeps our anglers tapped into the best Bristol Bay has to offer.
Attention to detail
Everything we do is intentional and designed with purpose. We want you to feel relaxed yet completely taken care of. We’ve completely remodeled the cabins to provide you with modern comfortable accommodations.
Safety
Our guides are all Coast Guard Licensed and carry a first aid kit at all times. We also carry a DeLorme Inreach device, which allows us to send satellite text messages to one-another or get help in case of emergency. All of our boats are equipped with life jackets, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment. We also have low profile life jackets available for any of our guests that would like to wear them whenever on the water.
We offer fresh, organic food prepared by a world class chef
From home-made bread baked and sliced daily, to fresh hot soup for lunch. We have a vegetable garden and try to use our veggies in our soups and sandwiches whenever possible.
We have an experienced Bristol Bay pilot
Our pilot grew up flying sea planes with his father in the Bristol Bay area, and with some hard work, it didn’t take long for him to fulfill his dream of guiding and flying on his own. He started at the bottom of the totem pole at local Bristol Bay lodges until he earned the opportunity to both guide and fly. He has been flying his entire life!
Top notch fishing gear
We pride ourselves on our guests using some of the best fishing gear on the market. If needed, we provide waterproof backpacks for all of our guests. This allows you to keep your personal items and extra clothes dry during all conditions.
Meticulous fish processing and ice
The Lodge at 58* North is one of the only outfitters in the region to bring ice to every salmon destination we fish. We feel that wild salmon is too precious to not be handled with absolute pride. It is for that reason we bleed and ice every salmon that our guests harvest all season. Getting ice to remote destinations takes a significant amount of work, but we feel it is worth the effort. We work incredibly hard to package your fish when we return to the lodge. All salmon fillets are cleaned meticulously before they are vacuum sealed and frozen. Then they are labeled with the fish species as well as your name. And for your trip home, they are packed frozen in waxed cardboard boxes.
We take pride in our property, boats, and plane
Our boats are spotless. They are all equipped with wash down pumps, allowing us to keep our boats clean (and safe) at all times.
Equipment
1958 deHavilland Beaver on floats
Two 21’ x 84” Willie Raptor boats. These boats travel to the Nushagak River for the first part of our season. They are very wide and stable with tons of storage. They also handle rough water very well, so long runs are very comfortable compared to other lodge ‘fly-out’ boats. After their time on the Nushagak, they return home to the Naknek, where we swap out their propellers for jet units.
Two 18’ Koffler Jet Drifters. We use these boats on the Naknek and Kvichak Rivers. They run very shallow and are great to fly fish from. They are both equipped with casting braces, so anglers remain safe when casting while we row down river.
One 16’ Jon boat. This boat spends it’s season on the Alagnak and Kvichak River.
Three 10.5’ inflatable rafts. We use these to float a number of rivers throughout the season. They are small enough to pack into a float plane and carry a significant distance over tundra, yet large enough for two anglers and one guide to float and fish downriver.
