Top Ten Items to Bring to Alaska!

We pride ourselves in providing almost everything you would need for a fly fishing adventure. We appreciate all of the effort our guests make to visit our lodges, so we want to make sure we’re able to equip them to be successful on the water. However, we understand that many of our guests have their own equipment or want to add their own personal touch to their setup! If that’s the case, here are the top 10 things you should remember when visiting!

1. Rain Gear

Whether we’re fishing in Oregon or Alaska, precipitation is often a part of our days on the water. We strongly encourage our guests to bring along a fully waterproof rain jacket. A wading jacket is even a good idea in case we hop in the water on a chilly fall day. A quality hat to wear in the rain is also a helpful accessory. Anything to keep you comfortable in the midst of inclement weather is going to make the trip far more enjoyable.

2. Waders and Wading Boots

Waders are an extremely helpful piece of gear that you can bring on a fishing adventure. Waders make almost every part of the water accessible. There are times when we fish runs that require a decent amount of wading. Also, if we do a fly-in trip, we’re going to be hiking. These hikes often require creek crossings. We want to make sure you don’t get wet and cold.

We also recommend a great set of wading boots. While many of the rivers we fish have gravel bottoms, there are still boulders and slippery areas that we’re going to traverse. A comfortable set of wading boots for walking and fishing is going to make your time on the water better. We like to stick with rubber bottoms and aluminum bars on our wading boots. They will need to be removed for fly outs in the float plane.

3. Fishing Licenses

At Frigate, we’re more than happy to provide details on the exact fishing licenses you’re going to need for your trip, but we are not an authorized license retailer. The process is fairly straightforward for Alaska, and we’re happy to talk you through how to secure those. If you are fishing in June or July you will need the King Stamp, all other months no king stamp is needed.

4. Polarized Sunglasses

The difference a great pair of polarized sunglasses can make is astounding. When days are cloudy or there’s a glare off the water, it can make it difficult to sight fish. Sight fishing is an absolute blast, and it’s easiest when you’re able to see into the water. Bring along your favorite pair because it’s going to put you on even more fish. As we’re guiding, we often point out fish or specific areas we want your fly to go, and it makes your life easier if you’re able to identify those things with us.

5. Moisture Wicking Clothing or Wool

Outdoor clothing is going to keep you comfortable on your trip with us. Whether you’re walking around the lodge or preparing for a day on the water, quick drying clothing is important. We encourage our guests to have a nice set of base layer pants and shirts to bring along. Base layers keep our core warm on cold days, so make sure those are moisture wicking.

On especially warm days, breathable fishing shirts and a light set of pants to wear under your waders is going to prevent you from overheating.

6. Camera

We’re blessed to be able to fish in some beautiful areas, and we want you to be able to remember the beauty. While we’ll be snapping pictures of you through your trip, it’s even better if you can take the pictures you would like. Smart phones often have great camera quality these days so make sure to also equip with a waterproof case.

A DSLR or other camera can do an even better job of capturing the beauty! Make sure you have a waterproof case to go with it.

7. Fishing Packs

We recommend bringing your own waterproof backpack. Make sure it's not overly large so you can still maneuver in a boat and on land. A place to keep your lunch, water and other necessities.

8. Reading Materials

At the end of the day, it’s nice to unwind with a book. There’s something about being out in nature for a day that lends itself to a good book. Whether it’s a backcountry thriller or a romantic mystery, bring it along! There will be some hours in the evening after dinner where you may want to unwind by yourself. Socializing is always an option, but time to reflect and read is always a gift.

9. Headphones/Podcasts

When you visit our lodge, there is limited internet access! So, please download any podcasts, music, tv shows or movies that you are wanting before you make the final journey to us. Often, guests will listen to their music as we’re flying between locations! Bring along a pair of headphones or ear buds as well, it’s a beautiful thing to create your own soundtrack to your Alaska visit.

1.Be Yourself!

As cliche as it sounds, we want to see our guests comfortable. While it may take a couple hours to be at ease, we want you to feel free to be yourself and make yourself at home. If you need anything or have suggestions on what we can do to make the experience better, we welcome them. We’re beyond appreciative of your business.
