Things to do in Anchorage

Once you’ve finished your exciting trip with Justin and Kate at their lodge, odds are, you’re

going to have a day or two in Anchorage while you’re waiting for your flight home. Don’t let

these days go to waste. You’ll find that Anchorage is one of the most unique cities in the United

States, and you don’t have to waste your time sitting in a run of the mill hotel. Take a few of

these recommendations into consideration, so when you leave Bristol Bay, you have a few

things to do!

Things to Do!

Depending on your preferences, you can find more outdoor activities or experience the culture

that Anchorage has to offer. There’s a surprising amount of activities nearby Anchorage.

Flattop Mountain in Chugach State Park

It’d be a shame to leave Alaska without enjoying some of the high quality hiking. The Flattop

Mountain Trail is a short and sweet hike within Chugach State Park. Chugach State Park is one

of the largest state parks in the country! It’s nearly 500,000 acres and within the park is Flattop

Mountain. Flattop Mountain is a 3-mile loop that gains 1,400 feet throughout it.

It’s a bit of a scramble at the top, but doable if you take your time! You’ll have the joy of

summiting a mountain without having to give out an immense amount of effort. The final push is

a bit challenging, but it’s a great place to stretch your legs for an early morning view. Take along

your hiking boots and poles and see if you can tackle Flattop Mountain. Be careful if it’s raining,

but enjoy the views at the top.

The hike is located 30 minutes from the heart of downtown Anchorage!

Anchorage Museum

If you’ve had enough of the outdoors and are desiring some local history, pay a visit to the

Anchorage Museum. You can spend anywhere from an hour to an entire day exploring the

museum and the current exhibits they have in place. There’s exhibits for everyone to enjoy!

Plus, it’s located right in the heart of downtown near numerous hotels! It’s easily within walking

distance and only 10 minutes from the Anchorage Airport.

Alaska Botanical Garden

If you need more of a taste of the native flora of Alaska, make sure you pay a visit to the Alaska

Botanical Garden. It’s a completely outdoor experience, so make sure you check the weather

before you make a visit. It’s a great place to loosen your legs and kill an hour or two while

learning a bit more about the environment within Alaska.

It’s located a few minutes from downtown and less than 20 minutes from the airport!

Places to Stay

While there are a fair share of chain hotels for you to stay, the local lodging options are

wonderful. You’ll be coming off a lovely stay on the water in Bristol Bay, and you can tap into

some history with the following lodging options.

Anchorage Grand Hotel

The Anchorage Grand Hotel is one of the more unique hotels in the city. It is a 31 suite hotel

located right in the heart of downtown. You’re likely going to be located within walking distance

of many of the local amenities. The rooms have kitchens and other amenities you would need

for a short or long stay in Anchorage. If you’re into some local Anchorage history, then the

Anchorage Grand Hotel is good.

Alyeska Resort

If you’re wanting something a little bit out of the city, the Alyeska Resort is a wonderful option.

It’s a ski resort in the winter, but it’s a great place to spend some time to get a bit more of an

outdoor feel. You’ll likely need a car to get to the lodge, but once you’re there, you won’t need to

leave. Trails and mountain views are all right at your fingertips.

Hotel Captain Cook

Hotel Captain Cook is another hotel located in Anchorage Alaska. There are 546 rooms that

anglers can choose from along with restaurants and an athletic club. If you’re the type that

missed the business of the city on your fishing trip, then stay at the Hotel Captain cook. It’s a 4-

star hotel that will give you a great overall experience!

Food to Eat

Last but certainly not least, you’re going to need to eat. Anchorage thrives with its local options.

Many of the favorite restaurants within Anchorage have been in business for the past 30 or 40

years serving locals and tourists. Whatever type of food you want, you can find it. However,

make sure you put the following four restaurants at the top of your list! While you’ll be spoiled

with your experience with Chef Jason at the lodge, some local spots in Anchorage are worth

visiting.

Moose’s Tooth Pub & Pizzeria

Moose’s Tooth Pub & Pizzeria is a fan favorite for those visiting Anchorage. You have unique

pizzas and house-brewed beer on the menu. The psychedelic art is just an added bonus. You’ll

find that many people say that this is the best pizza in Anchorage. Plus, it’s located right near a

local climbing gym if you want to burn off some calories after the pizza.

Kincaid Grille and Wine Bar

If you’re interested in more of a fancier evening night out, the Kincaid Grill is for you. Quality

wine choices and personalized service are not always easy to find in Anchorage, but the Kincaid

Grille gives you a unique experience.

Jen’s Restaurant

One of the places you have to try in Anchorage is Jen’s Restaurant. You’ll find it is also on the

fancier end, but the food is well worth it. Specialty entrees and wines are always available to

you. However, it’s only open Tuesday through Saturday, so make sure you plan accordingly.
